The Journal of Ann Putnam

Dear Journal,

Today I saw Betty laying in bed being possesed by the devil. It was an awful thing seeing her as she was moaning under the influence of Satan. Betty is not the only one who has not awakened. My own Ruth is still laying in her bed unconscious and I don't know what to do to help her. Things I said were "She can not bear to hear the lord's name!" After the singing stopped Betty began to moan because the devil is possesing her and the lord's name hurts her. I also said "You think it God's work you should never lose a child, nor a grandchild either, and I burry all but one? There are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires!" I said this because it is unfair that all my children but one died but none of Rebecca Nurse's children or grandchildren have died. When i said that in this town there are fires within fires, I mean that there are hidden things in this town that nobody sees. Things people said about me were that I need to relax, be patient, and pray for my daughter to become conscious again. Rebecca Nurse said Ruth will be fine but I do not believe it. One thing that I wish I had said would have been to tell everyone to relax because if I had not been so worried then maybe everyone else would have calmed down. I bet that tomorrow I will be back at the reverend's house and his daughter will be okay but my Ruth will still be under some invisable spell. (BO)

Dear Journal,

Today I saw Reverend Parris, Abigail Williams, and my Husband. Parris's daughter Betty was found unwakable in her bed this morning. While discussing the cause witchcraft came into the picture. We suspect that there is an evil witch in the community. I said to Parris "I have laid seven babies unbaptized in the earth. Believe me, sir, you never saw more hearty babies born. And yet, each would wither in my arms the very night of their birth...And so I thought to sned her to your Tituba." Parris convicted me of commiting a formidable sin trying to conjure up the dead. I wish I hadn't said anything about trying to conjure up my dead babies. I bet people will be accusing me of being a witch by tommorow. (ES)

Dear Journal,

Today I saw Satan take away one of our town’s children, little Betty Parris. As of now she’s passed asleep at her home, but the night before, her father caught her and the others doing sinful things in the woods. They danced and sang around in circles and I even saw her lift from the ground and fly! But my poor Ruth, her soul has surely been taken. She does not see or listen or speak and can not eat. That Betty and that Abigail and Tituba were up to this probably. Especially Tituba. She’ll be the death of Betty. I said to Rev. Parris,” it is surely a stroke of hell upon you.” He does not listen and we will see what will happen. People say I’m old and know nothing but I know that Tituba will be the death of that whole family. Even the town. I should have warned Rev. Parris but he would not listen. I bet tomorrow Betty or my poor Ruth will only get worse. (NGL)
